A spokesman at the Hyundai plant in Montgomery, Ala., said the plan is being evaluated in South Korea “as a way to get the most efficiency out of the two plants.”
Hyundai has been operating 10-hour shifts and Saturday shifts to meet demand for the Santa Fe.
The Kia plant and its 1,300 employees have made more than 50,000 Sorentos since production started in November. It plans to start a second shift by this fall and have a workforce of nearly 2,500.
“We’ll be building a second product here soon, but haven’t confirmed what that will be yet,” Kia spokeswoman Joanne Mabrey said Monday.
