Dear Editor:

Under the disguise of “offering tax relief to property owners”, our school board is proposing the following:

A) Institute a 1 percent sales tax ( Both rich and poor would pay this tax ).

B) Reduce current property taxes by only 70 percent of what the 1 percnt sales tax equates to ( Why not 100 percent? ).

C) Reduce the school millage rate cap by ony 49%(70% of 70%) of what the 1% sales tax equates to ( Why not 100 percent? ).

If the school board’s proposed 1 percent sales tax were to be implemented today, they would reap $3,400,000 MORE per year than they are currently getting, and they would have the potential to reap up to $8,000,000 more per year.

A statement in the November 21,2008 LaGrange News claimed that “The owner of a $100,000 house would save $166.40.” Not true! This “savings”does not take into account that this same homeowner could possibly pay more than $166 in taxes per year due to the additional 1 percent sales tax.

If you have questions concerning any of these figures, feel free to call me at (706) 882-7837.

Beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing!
