Troup County sheriff’s deputies said Wendy Dunn, 35, of 224 S. River Run Drive was found yelling by campers at Ringer Access about 11:45 a.m. Friday. The campers said Dunn said, “God is going to take my life,” but could not say why.
The campers called 911 after they saw the woman run toward the lake, heard her scream again and then heard nothing. When lawmen arrived, they saw a body floating in the lake. It was recovered near the shoreline of the lake’s backwaters behind the Troup County Shrine Club on Hannah Road. Deputy Coroner Burt Winston pronounced Dunn dead at 2:01 p.m.
The campers were able to lead investigators to Dunn’s vehicle, a Mercury Mountaineer, where they found a six-pack of beer with two cans consumed and an unknown medication, along with Dunn’s student and work ID cards.
Her body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Atlanta to determine the exact cause of death. Her death, just two miles from her home, is not believed to be suspicious, but Nixon said it could be weeks before autopsy results are in.
“We’re still investigating,” said sheriff’s chief investigator Charles Nixon. “We don’t know if she drowned or died of hypothermia.”
