LaGrange Memorial Library is offering Internet tutoring to aid job-seekers.

“Many residents of Troup County have found searching for a job difficult, not only because jobs are so scarce these days but because they do not know how to use the Internet,” said library director JoEllen Ostendorf. “Nearly all job openings require users to go online to fill out applications as well as supplying an e-mail address to which the employer can respond. If a person has never used a computer, this makes searching for a job almost impossible.”

To address this problem, the library has teamed with the LaGrange High School Service Club to provide one-on-one tutoring for library patrons needing assistance. The sessions cover:

— Logging in and out of the library’s computer using the bar code on the library card. Users without library cards can present two forms of ID at the circulation desk to get a free one or a temporary number can be requested that is good for the day;

— Setting up an e-mail account; logging in; and sending and replying to e-mails;

— Setting up an account on sites such as Westaff Employment Services, Georgia Department of Labor, Amazon, Home Depot and others;

— Searching the web;

— Completing a form on the web, particularly job application forms;

— Navigating Troup County’s job site: www. troupcountyworks.com;

— Saving a file to the F drive and attaching to an e-mail or account form; and

— Opening Word software and using the program’s resume template to create a resume to attach to a job application.

Students are available from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. weekdays to work one-on-one with the user to help navigate the web.

“We see so many people who are frustrated in applying for jobs since they don’t know how to navigate the Internet that we are very excited to be able to offer tutoring,” Ostendorf said. “We deeply appreciate Judy Freeman for working with the service club and making it possible for us to offer this training to our residents.”
