Annette Freeman wasn’t expecting to be the center of attention.
But for a few minutes this week at Trinidad Benham, it was all about her as her bosses called her off the line for a “meeting.” Still in her hairnet and ear plugs, Freeman found out her fellow employees were meeting so she could be presented with a United Way of West Georgia “Live United” award.
“What are you all doing? I’m gonna get you all,” Freeman said jokingly through tears.
Plant manager Kevin Jolly and others said Freeman was a unanimous choice to receive the award. The plant itself also was honored.
Freeman, a cartoner/ casepack operator and nine-year employee of the plant, “gives regularly, faithfully and above fair share,” said Linda McMullen, United Way of West Georgia board president. “That kind of giving really makes a difference.”
From 2003 to 2009, Freeman gave about twice her “fair share” contribution from her paycheck, according to a form filled out by company leaders nominating her for the award. In 2010, Freeman is giving about three times her fair share.
“She does not do it because of a sense of obligation or for show,” the nomination form said. “She does it because she truly believes in United Way and understands the impacts the United Way agencies have in our community.”
n The local United Way is giving out Live United awards for the second year in a row, in lieu of an annual end-of-campaign banquet. The awards are given to individuals and businesses who best represent the United Way motto of “give, advocate, volunteer.” Stories on other award winners will appear throughout the week.
