After coming within one victory of a state championship earlier this year, the Carrollton Lady Trojans appear poised to make another title run this season.

The Lady Trojans are 7-0, and they’ve beaten four of their opponents by 40 or more points.

The LaGrange Lady Grangers, who are off to a 3-1 start, will try to throw up a road block against the powerful Lady Trojans today.

The two teams will play at 7 p.m. in Carrollton in the first round of a three-day tournament.

LaGrange’s boys’ team will open its tournament stay against Douglas County at 5 p.m.

Both games will be played at Central (Carrollton) High.

The Lady Grangers have played well early on, but they haven't played a team the caliber of Carrollton.

After going 29-3 a year ago en route to a second-place finish in Class AAA, the Lady Trojans have been terrific this season.

Their closest game was a 19-point victory over Alexander.

“It’s a really tough matchup,” LaGrange head coach Jan Jones said. “They made it all the way to the finals last year. They’ll be really strong.”

Whatever happens today, the Lady Grangers are guaranteed three tournament games.

They’ll play again Saturday and Monday.

“We’ll work on some things and try to get better,” Jones said.

In the boys’ game, LaGrange is looking to bounce back from a 75-70 loss to Heard County on Tuesday.

It was the first loss for the Grangers, who started 4-0.

“It was a good game. We didn’t play terrible, they just played good,” said Mark Veal, LaGrange High's assistant coach. “We watched the film, and Heard played well.”

The Douglas County Tigers bring a 4-5 record into today's game, and they've dropped four of their past five after starting 3-1.

“They’ve been up and down, but they’ve had some good wins,” Veal said. “They’ll play full-court, man-to-man defense. They’re small, but they have quick guards.”
