Man accused of threatening woman with knife

A woman was threatened with a knife by a man in the 200 block of Clark Street about 12:30 a.m. today.

Police said Roger Lee Gates, 51, of Long Cane Road walked into the residence where the woman and a friend were visiting.

Police gave this account:

Gates grabbed a knife and threatened to kill the woman while a child was in the room. Gates also slapped the man she was visiting with an object while they were in the back yard.

The woman tried to call 911, and Gates knocked the phone out of her hands. She then grabbed the child and fled to a neighbor’s house, and police were called. Gates fled in a Pontiac Bonneville and was found later.

He was charged with aggravated assault, burglary, third-degree cruelty to children, simple battery and obstruction.

False teeth stolen with purse

A thief grabbed a woman’s purse containing her false teeth about 4 a.m. Sunday.

Police said the woman was waiting for a cab in the driveway of a residence in the 700 block of South Greenwood Street when a man walked up to her, stole her purse and fled.

Besides the false teeth, the woman also had medications, $20 and a pair of reading glasses. The items were valued at about $830.

Woman exposes herself in street

A woman was found disoriented and exposing herself in the 600 block of Borton Street.

Police said the woman was reported by residents walking in the road exposing herself. Officers found her lying on the ground, leaving children unsupervised nearby.

She was treated at West Georgia Medical Center due to possible alcohol poisoning.

Arrest

Reginald Lamar Saffold, 20, of Keyes Street was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and within 1,000 feet of a housing project; obstruction, and criminal trespass.

Damage

n A vandal damaged a door in the 700 block of Park Avenue by throwing things against it, causing about $100 damage.

n More than $500 damage was done to a fraternity house and homemade bar after a party in the 100 block of Harris Street.

Thefts, burglaries

n A thief stole a Kenwood car stereo system from a vehicle in the 900 block of Mooty Bridge Road.

n A Nokia Nuron cellphone valued at $200 was stolen from a youth at Carmike Cinema 10 at 201 Main St.

n A resident of Glenn Street in West Point said a thief entered her home and automobile, and stole an undisclosed amount of money.

Burger beef

A woman was arrested on disorderly conduct charges on Ware’s Cross Road after she got into an argument with her brother over a hamburger his mother had prepared for him. Troup County sheriff’s deputies said she repeatedly yelled obscenities after they arrived to investigate.

Staying cool

Sheriff’s deputy Chad Traylor said he stopped a driver at Long Cane Access about 10:30 p.m. Friday and “noticed that he was not wearing any clothes.”

“I asked him if he had consumed any alcoholic drinks and he advised me that he had been drinking while taking a bath inside the park due to his residence having no running water,” Traylor said.

The 56-year-old man stepped out of the car and put his clothes on, then flunked a field sobriety test and registered a blood-alcohol level of 0.107.

He was charged with driving under the influence.
