The indictment charges Luke David Waters, 24, of Fairhope , Ala., with first-degree homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving and possession of three types of narcotics – oxycodone , stanozolol and nandrolone decanoate .
The 2-year-old, Helen Gray of Winder, was strapped in a car seat, but suffered head injuries and died at the scene. Her mother, Pamela Gray, 29, suffered crippling injuries and the child’s father, Brian Gray, 31, was treated for minor injuries at West Georgia Medical Center.
Four others were injured in the accident.
State troopers said traffic had almost come to a halt when Waters’ Chevrolet Tahoe hit the rear of the Honda Odyssey minivan in which the child was riding in the back seat. The Odyssey then ran into the back of a Ford Taurus, which in turn hit the rear of a Ford pickup.
The indictment says Waters drove “in a reckless manner in reckless disregard of the safety of persons and property by driving at an excessive speed … failing to stop in response to traffic conditions and striking the vehicle in front of him.”
The Gray family had been visiting friends and was returning to Winder when the accident occurred.
Among others indicted in Tuesday’s special grand jury session were:
n Ricky Jurwayne Moreland , 36, of LaGrange; kidnapping with bodily injury, false imprisonment, aggravated battery and battery. He allegedly assaulted a woman, breaking her nose and holding her against her will.
n Jarvis Lanier Cloud, 30, of LaGrange; aggravated assault and two counts of battery. Police said he attacked a man with an unknown object, causing scars to the head and body, and the victim’s spleen had to be removed.
n Andrew Tyler Graham, 24, of Martinez; child molestation; and
n Mon Trimphle Zackery , 36, of LaGrange; arson, for allegedly setting a fire that damaged a woman’s house on Higgins Street in West Point.
