Police gave this account:
As couple were arguing, the man started yelling at the woman and punched her in the face.
She took the child and locked themselves in the bathroom, and the man kicked the door in and dragged the woman out by her ankles, continuing to strike her. She tried to protect herself with a beer bottle when the man grabbed it and hit her with it. The woman told the boy to call police, but the man wouldn’t let him. The boy grabbed a knife and stabbed the man in the thumb.
The father removed the door he kicked open and cleaned up the blood, and all three then went to bed.
He was charged with battery and cruelty to a child.
Woman attempts to swallow drugs
A woman attempted to swallow narcotics after officers pulled her over on Wright Street, police said.
Police said Stephanie Lindsey, 42, of Bell Street was pulled over for failing to maintain her lane. Officers searched Lindsey and asked her to put her hands on the top of her head when they noticed she had a napkin in one of them. She allegedly dropped the napkin and put her hand to her mouth, which contained drugs.
Officers got Lindsey to spit the item out. When she was searched, they also found a crack pipe between her buttocks.
Lindsey was charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine and obstruction.
Man charged in armed robbery
A man was charged with armed robbery after officers learned he was one of two men who told a couple to get on the ground while carrying a gun and stole the woman’s purse about 3 a.m. May 13.
Police said Deshaun Lasay Howell, 17, of Kelley Street was identified as one of the men involved. Investigators found he was living in Alabama following the incident.
He was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and seven counts of participating in gang activity.
Arrests
n Shantron Rafiel Varner , 35, of Tower Street was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and driving on a suspended license.
n Courtney Hill, 20, of Guinn Street was charged with felony theft by shoplifting and giving false information.
n Deshaun Lasay Howell, 17, of Kelley Street was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and seven counts of participating in gang activity.
Thefts, burglaries
n A 32-inch Vizio flat-screen and clothing were stolen from a residence in the 100 block of Cleveland Drive. The items were valued at $640.
n A 32-inch flat-screen TV and a Nintendo Wii were stolen from a residence in the 100 block of Cox Street. The items were valued at $600.
n A wallet containing $400 was stolen from a man in the 300 block of Dix Street.
