A man walking on Ashton Street on Tuesday night after visiting a convenience store at 426 S. Greenwood St. was followed by two men, who attacked him and demanded money, police said.

The men were in the store at the same time of the victim and followed him onto the street. One of the men approached the man from behind and began choking him before repeatedly punching his head. The other man then asked for the victim’s wallet and claimed to have a gun, though the victim never saw one.

After only finding 75 cents on the victim, the attackers threw him to the ground and fled.

No arrests have been made and the victim refused medical treatment.

Hit and run

A woman driving in parking lot of Wal-Mart at 803 New Franklin Road struck the front driver’s side of another moving vehicle Tuesday afternoon, police said. The woman got out of her vehicle and asked the other driver if he was OK, then drove off.

Theft

A woman eating at McDonald’s at 146 Commerce Ave. on Tuesday afternoon returned to her vehicle and noticed her purse was missing. It contained several credit cards, insurance cards and $30.

Fire

Residents were evacuated in the vicinity of a fire Monday afternoon that destroyed a propane truck and workshop at 33 Victory Road in Heard County.

The truck and building were engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, and the truck’s pressure relief valves pushed flames 20 to 30 feet into the air.

Authorities evacuated residents within a one-mile radius and closed Ga. 34. About three hours later, the highway was reopened and residents were allowed to return to their homes. Firefighters remained at the scene throughout the night applying water to the tank to ensure there was no explosion.

No one was injured in the fire, which was attributed to a pipe breaking while repairs were being made to the vehicle.

Kia haul route to close

Now that the Interstate 85 interchange has opened for direct access to Kia Motors’ plant site, the Troup County Commission is removing all temporary “haul route” designations that were in place on county maintained roads.

All construction traffic related to Kia and surrounding development should use the new interchange at Exit 6, along with Kia Boulevard and Kia Parkway.

The DOT urged travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on interstates and state routes. It’s a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide.
