There’s no Simon, Ellen, Ryan or Randy, but that doesn’t mean the stakes won’t be high this weekend when the annual “West Georgia Idol” contest kicks off in Hogansville.

Singers already have signed up for the six-week competition at the Hogansville Elementary School Amphitheater. There’s a $1,000 cash prize and time in the recording studio for the winner, who also will perform at the Smith Family Theater in Nashville, Tenn. The contest is open to those 16 and older.

For April Connor, 26, the experience and prizes make it worth it to commute from her home in Atlanta for the contest. The Jackson, Tenn., native, who found out about the contest from Hogansville business owner Mary Stewart, has been singing in church since she was 8.

Conner participated in the “American Idol Experience” singing competition at Disney World in 2009. She was one of 21 contestants chosen to participate in a day full of seven shows in front of an audience of more than 800 people. She didn’t win the grand prize, which would have garnered a “free pass” straight to the television judges of “American Idol” during the next round of auditions. It still was a good experience, she says, and she’s hoping that translates to doing well in Hogansville.

“It was run just like it is on television, with three judges and a host,” she said.

Audience members picked the winners.

“It was pretty nerve-wracking,” she said. “It’s a good taste of what it’s like.”

- Competition starts at 4 p.m. Saturday at the amphitheater. For more information or to register as a contestant, visit westgeorgiaidol .com, or call (706) 637-9497 or (706) 637-8887. West Georgia Idol also may be found on Facebook .
