A “back to school bash” is planned for 6 p.m. Aug. 1 at Callaway Stadium, sponsored by the Elijah Kelley Foundation, on the day the actor and performer turns 24. Kelley will sing and perform at the event, where organizers are asking for a $7 a person donation to the foundation.
“Special guests” as well as motivational speakers will join Kelley in LaGrange, but the guest list still is being confirmed, said Shanitra Ransom, an adviser to the fund. The fund recently awarded a scholarship to 2010 Troup High School graduate David Todd.
Kelley, who is best known for his roles in “Hairspray,” “Take the Lead” and “28 Days,” wanted the event to have the feel of a birthday party, but also to be a celebration and encourage students to go back to school, Ransom said. Kelley’s mother, Everlene Flournoy , lives in the Los Angeles area with her son and will accompany him to LaGrange.
Kelley stars in the upcoming George Lucas film, “Red Tails,” an account of the Tuskeegee Airmen, the first group of black combat pilots in World War II.
Along with the party, Kelley also is looking for potential subjects for a proposed reality show, “Hometown Heroes,” which will honor local heroes in their communities. Ransom said the show will be shown nationally, but Kelley wants the pilot of the show to focus on people in LaGrange, where he grew up.
