When the Troup County 13-year-old all stars were in route to their state-tournament victory a a few weeks ago, they had to deal with the constant mood swings of Mother Nature.
As they tried to take the practice field on Monday, trying to tune up for this weekend’s Dixie Boys Baseball World Series, the team was once again met with inclement weather.
This team won’t let weather get in the way of its drive for a World Series title though.
Troup will be in Dothan, Ala. for the World Series, and it will face Halifax, Va. on Friday.
“We’re ready to go,” head coach Huey Hood said. “Other than getting run off the field because of the lightning (Monday), I am tickled to death about where we are at.”
Troup has been hard at work both on and off the practice field since winning the Georgia state title.
Last week, when the team wasn’t putting in work on the diamond, it was trying to raise money in order for the team to make the trip.
With funds ready to go. the team is now looking to sharpen the focus even more on the diamond.
“Everything is goinggood now,” Hood said. “The boys are eager. We look sharp, we just have to get back to the grind and get ready to go.”
Hood said that this year’s team will pull from the experience that it gained last year in the World Series.
Many of the players were on the 11-12-year-old team won the state title and participated in the World Series.
“Going through everything last year is going to make us ready for this year,” Hood said. “We will be a lot more prepared for everything that goes on than we were last year. They treat you good at these World Series and it’s kind of overwhelming with all of the attention that they give you, and its easy to forget what you came there to do.
“This year though we have more focus and we know what we are there for.”
The team will be back on the diamond today for practice before heading out Friday morning to the series.
“The weather got us today,” Hood said, “but we are going back (today) and we are going to practice twice as hard.”
