An autopsy Tuesday determined that accidental drowning caused the death of 91-year-old Jane Daniel, whose car ran off Cameron Mill Road and slid into West Point Lake. Daniel, who lived alone on Park Avenue, was driving north Monday morning when the 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme went off the right side of the road in a curve just north of Country Club Drive and traveled along the inside of a guardrail for more than 100 yards before entering the lake. She got out of the vehicle, but apparently slipped and fell on the rocky incline and couldn’t get up, police detective Jeremy Jones said. The water depth was about 2 1/2 to 3 feet.

Youth injured in ATV crash

A boy and his passenger were injured after his four-wheeler crashed into a truck near a trailer park in the 200 block of Tuggle Street. Police said Joshua Savage, 13, of Tuggle Street was driving the ATV around the trailer park with passenger Jasmine Roger, 14, of Cox Street. Savage then drove the ATV through a church parking lot, went through some bushes and was struck by a truck driven by Angel Acevedo-Paniagua, 25, of Barnard Avenue. Acevedo-Paniagua told officers he couldn’t stop in time to avoid the collision. Savage’s left foot and ankle were crushed between the bumper of the truck and the ATV engine. He was lifeflighted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. A condition report was unavailable this morning. Cox was taken to West Georgia Medical Center for injuries. Neither were wearing helmets. Savage was cited for failure to yield. Acevedo-Paniagua was charged with not having a valid license.

Worker hurt

An employee’s hand got caught in a conveyor belt about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kia supplier Powertech in West Point. The unidentified employee was flown by helicopter to Columbus Medical Center, but a condition report and further information were not available. A Powertech spokesman said the matter was “confidential and we’re not allowed to dispense information to the public,” and a West Point police spokesman said they were handcuffed “due to the HIPPA (medical privacy) law.”

Dirt-biker injured

Evan Tucker, 14, of 917 Mobley Bridge Road was riding a dirt bike at a friend’s nearby residence about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday when the side of the bike hit a pine tree, injuring his left ankle. He was taken to West Georgia Medical Center, where he was admitted in good condition.

Man steals cash from vehicle

A man was robbed of $35 after he agreed to give a man a ride from the Chevron station at 315 New Franklin Road. Police said the victim was filling up his vehicle when a man approached him and asked for a ride about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday. The driver agreed and told the man to sit in the car while he filled up. The rider got out of the car, saying he had something to do. When the driver saw his money missing from under the seat, he told the man to give it back. The man pulled up his shirt, showed a silver revolver and fled down Mitchell Avenue. The man was described as being about 6 feet tall and extremely thin in his early 20s with a short afro, wearing a purple shirt and blue jean shorts.

I'm not sure why the West Point police department could not identify the worker injured.... local law enforcement is not bound by HIPAA and if they were involved then their actions are public record.
