A Snelson Street man was charged with criminal damage to property and marijuana possession Monday after he was suspected of breaking in the Daniel Food Mart at 512 Daniel St.

Witnesses said they saw Jerry Lamar Grier, 19, run away from the store with what they thought was a screwdriver after he was seen tampering with an air-conditioning unit at the store. When Grier was found, he said it was a stick, not a screwdriver and he was not trying to break in.

Grier told police he’d been to the store Sunday to make a purchase and left his marijuana on the air-conditioner unit. When he went Monday to retrieve it, the drugs had fallen inside the air conditioner unit and he couldn’t get to them, so he was trying to get to them with a stick, he said.

Officers found the bag of suspected marijuana in the air conditioner.

Man injured on motorized bicycle

A man on a motorized bicycle was taken to West Georgia Medical Center bleeding from the head and later charged with failure to yield after an incident Monday at South Davis Road and Lafayette Parkway.

John Maxie Payne, 70, of Short Street, was injured when witnesses said he attempted to turn left into oncoming traffic, when he hit a Nissan driven by Roland Rice of North View Pointe Drive.

Payne was thrown from the bicycle, and Rice’s car was damaged from the impact.

Payne was treated and released from the hospital.

Burglary

A Grady Street woman reported Monday someone kicked in the back door of her house and broke her flat-screen television worth $1,400. Nothing was taken, but the burglar also poured bleach all over her furniture and detergent on her floor. The woman’s bedroom was ransacked and hair dye was sprayed on the walls and her bed.

Damage

A man is charged with obstruction and damage to city property after becoming enraged in the back of a LaGrange police patrol car and breaking the rear door handle in two.

Officers had picked up the man for trespassing in the Lucy Morgan Homes property and were taking him to jail when the man began kicking the window and head-butting the cage separating the officer from the back seat. The officer discovered the damage to his car after the suspect was inside the jail.
