Police said Jeffrey Eugene Brooks, 24, of New Hutchinson Mill Road was sitting in a white Chevrolet. As officers turned on their patrol cars’ sirens, Brooks ran toward a paint shop nearby before being stopped in the 700 block of Hill Street.

Officers found on him a bag of marijuana, about $270 and a cell phone. He was taken to Troup County jail.

Brooks was named as the shooter in an Aug. 17 incident in the Taco Bell parking lot at 314 New Franklin Road, in which a man’s vehicle was shot at multiple times.

Brooks was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, possession of marijuana, obstruction, two counts failure to appear, giving false information and obstruction.

Man tries to cash stolen check

A man gave all his information to bank tellers while trying to cash a stolen check in the drive-through of Community Bank and Trust at 201 Broad St.

Police said the man was in the back seat of a vehicle driven by a woman with another man in the passenger seat. The man in the back seat attempted to pass the check written out for $800 and provided his Georgia ID card and Georgia Transitional Center ID.

The teller checked the account because of the amount.

After finding the account’s checks had been reported stolen, the teller asked her manager to call police. The man in the car asked for the check and his IDs back, but the teller refused, saying the police were on their way. The group fled.

The woman whose checkbook was stolen reported that someone entered her auto in the 300 block of Springdale Drive on Aug. 16.
