It didn’t take long for a 9-year-old LaGrange boy to wreck the motorized scooter he got for Christmas.

Witnesses said Latevious Cotton had been driving the scooter for about 20 minutes Thursday morning in the yard at 610 Whitesville St. when he lost control while trying to turn around, possibly because the accelerator got stuck.

The vehicle traveled onto Whitesville Street and into the path of a southbound 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by Joan McWhorter, 82, of Roopville, who put on the brakes in an unsuccessful effort to avoid the collision.

Latevious was taken by ambulance to West Georgia Medical Center, where he was treated for a fractured right knee and right thumb, and has to wear a cast on the leg.

“He’s ready to get back on it, but his mother doesn’t want him to ride it,” said family friend James Jackson.

Speaking from a mothers point of view, accidents happen. This little boy is 9, so what? I think he needed some guidance before he was turned loose with a motorized scooter. He should have been told never to ride it in the road and most of all his mother should have been watching him for the simple fact that he is 9. Its not that he wasnt old enough, it was just an accident and probably a lack of parental supervision. Things go wrong sometimes but as parents we have to play close attention to our kids so that accidents can be prevented.
