William Herndon is the democratic challenger for the County Commission District 2 race.

Herndon, a Troup County native, said he decided to run because he feels the commission needs some new blood. He said he has a lot of experiences in different areas that he can bring to the commission.

His work in several fields, including EMS services and the fire department, and experience raising children give him insight into the issues everyday people in the county face, Herndon said. He enjoys being a hard worker and good communicator.

Herndon said one of the big issues he sees in the county is the high cost of taxes. He said there needs to be alternative ways for the county to raise revenue without increasing taxes. Although he said the commission has said it hasn’t increased taxes, many people’s tax bills have gone up.

Like many people, Herndon said he is an average tax payer and that the cost of his living has steadily increased.

Herndon said he doesn’t know the answer to fixing the high cost of taxes and doesn’t claim to know all the answers for issues in the county, but said he will work to find solutions.

“I pledge to work hard for the people of the county and listen to their complaints,” he said.

Herndon said he spends a lot of time talking to people throughout the community. Running a part-time barber shop, he speaks with many people, and felt he has built good associations with people that will serve him well as a commissioner able to facilitate his constituents.

He promised to be a public official that would be out in the community and socialize among people. Herndon said that if anyone called him with an issue, he would make sure to return their call and follow up on their requests.

Although he said he didn’t have any big objects as commissioner, Herndon said he knows what’s right and fair for people and that he would do things for the right reason.

“If people elect me, I will do the right thing,” Herndon said.
