Members of the Sons Of Lafayette Male Choir gave a strong performance Sunday, as they ended their 2012 season with “Christmas with the Sons” at the First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange.
Before the concert started, the Sons of Lafayette’s President Harold Tarpley warmly greeted members of the audience. He also reminded them that since the performance was meant to be a Christmas celebration and worship service, all applause needed to be held until after the choir finished Handel’s “Hallelujah.”
Loren Pinkerman took his final bow as the official director of the group after the third performance of the Sons of Lafayette’s Christmas concert. The group’s Christmas performances also featured David Kocsis as the organist, Eve McKibben as the accompanist and Callie Hammond as the violinist. A number of soloists were also featured during the performances.
Soloists included both instrumental and voice selections. Callie Hammond played “O Holy Night’ as a violin solo and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” was performed as a solo by Organist David Kocsis. Voice solos were given by Pinkerman for “Mary’s Little Boy Child” and Jeff Todd for “Still, Still, Still.”
Sunday’s performance was well attended with many of the audience members being longtime supporters of both the group and of Pinkerman.
Dee Woodward was one of the group’s former members and a past-president.
“I was the first president of the group after they after they were incorporated. Pinkerman made this group, no doubt about it. He was the driving force, he will be missed,” Woodward said.
Helen J. Rice came into the church and was able to secure a seat for herself right in the front in the second pew.
“I have been to a few of their previous performances, I especially didn’t want to miss this one since it will be the last concert that he (Pinkerman) will be the director for. I always enjoy these concerts,” Rice said.
R. Wayne Woodson will be the group’s new director. He was introduced to the LaGrange audiences during the group’s Christmas concerts and conducted the group in “Mary’s Little Boy Child” when Pinkerman was featured as a soloist.
Woodson is pleased to have been selected as the Sons of Lafayette’s new director and is looking forward to his new role with the group.
“It has been a very smooth transition, everyone has been very welcoming to me here in LaGrange,” Woodson said.
At the end of the group’s presentation, Pinkerman thanked everyone for their support over the 12 years that he was the group’s director. The members of the choir also took the opportunity to thank Pinkerman.
On behalf of all of the choir, member George Petruff presented Pinkerman with a framed program poster that all of the members had signed. Pinkerman was also presented with a voucher for a beach vacation for both he and his wife, Pat, to enjoy.
The Sons of Lafayette will be starting their rehearsals for their 2013 music season at 5:30 p.m on Jan. 14, at the First Presbyterian Church. All males who are interested in joining the group are cordially invited to attend this first rehearsal.
