After two consecutive blowout victories, the Hawks faced a bit of a challenge in the championship game against W.D. Mohammed, but in the end it turned into another one-sided win.
After W.D. Mohammed got within seven early in the fourth period, Hillgrove pulled away for a 72-54 victory to cap a dominant run through the tournament.
Keith Ray led the Hawks (13-1) with 21 points, and tournament MVP Kyle Castlin added 16 points.
For W.D. Mohammed (12-1), Jihad Hameed led the way with 18 points, and Omar Majid scored 16 points, with 14 of those points coming in the second half.
“It was a great tournament. LaGrange does a great job putting this thing on,” Hillgrove coach Edward Morris said. “We were fortunate enough to win. The kids did a great job.”
The Caliphs got within seven moments into the fourth period, but B.J. Brown’s 3-pointer with 6:55 left pushed the lead back to 10, and the Hawks held at least a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
The Hawks ended up outscoring the Caliphs 23-14 in the final period.
After W.D. Mohammed made its run, Morris said “we just calmed down, we didn’t panic. We kept our composure, and we were able to finish it off.”

VALLEY 45
Rockdale County outscored Valley 8-2 in overtime to secure a 51-45 victory and finish in fifth place.
Darius Mitchell led Rockdale with 26 points, and Caleb Jenkins paced Valley with 17 points.
ST. FRANCIS 81
RUSSELL COUNTY 69
In the seventh-place game, St. Francis charged out to a 48-37 lead at the half and then held on in the second half for an 81-69 victory.
Russell County’s Carl Johnson had a big day with 27 points, and McKinely Brown led a balanced St. Francis scoring effort with 14 points.
