ROCKMART - It was Nehemiah Jones’ night.

The Callaway High player not only scored 34 points, but his 3-pointer at the buzzer lifted the Cavaliers to a 69-68 victory over Rockmart in the Region 4-AAA opener for both teams.

The Cavaliers got the ball with about 10 seconds left after a Rockmart player missed a free throw.

The Cavaliers ran the clock down, and while the play didn’t go exactly as scripted, it worked out in the end as Jones’ shot was true.

Callaway head coach Terry Hayes said he’d been encouraging Jones to finish games stronger, and he did that Friday night.

“It was a really big shot,” Hayes said. “We’d been asking him to finish, and this time he finished.”

Tyrell Tigner added 14 points for Callaway, and Terry Godwin scored eight points.

There was no suspense in the girls’ game, with the Lady Cavaliers rolling to a 60-26 victory.

Callaway led 11-2 after the first quarter, 25-8 at the half, and 54-12 through three periods.

Monica Jackson led Callaway with 20 points, Jamonica Dean added 13 points, and Tanesha Johnson scored 12 points.

Callaway’s teams will be on the road again today against region foe Chapel Hill.
