The Lady Warriors won easily, 55-38, but the Warriors came out on the short end, 69-57.
The Warriors played a very competitive first half, lead after the first quarter 18-17 and they went to the intermission tied with the Crusaders at 29-29.
Griffin exploded for 24 third quarter points, though, while holding the Warriors to just 13 points, forcing a number of turnovers to coincide with LaGrange Academy’s poor shooting.
LaGrange Academy was down by as many as 16 points in the second half.
Although the Warriors made a run to trim the lead to nine, they were unable to hold on as Griffin took control to pull away.
“We made some turnovers and we didn’t do a very good job getting back on defense,” coach Britt Gaylor said. “They have a real good team and they took that momentum and rode with it. They confused a little bit on defense, but we’ll be prepared for it the next time.”
For the Warriors, they were led in scoring by Mayokun Oshinowo who had 24 points.
Logan Moody had 14 points followed by Chase Wardlaw with seven points.
For the Lady Warriors, the going was much easier.
A 21-6 scoring run helped LaGrange Academy go ahead 35-20 at the half.
“We did a good job of coming out early and playing together and also having intensity from the start and I think that really helped us play a full, four quarter game,” Gaylor said after the girls’ game. “If you commit to defense, it will eventually wear on the other team and that’s what it did. Our pressure just continued to wear on them and wear on them and I don’t think they’re used to that kind of pressure.”
Griffin came back out in the second half and managed to trim that 15 point lead to nine, but the Lady Warriors raised the lead back up to 15 at the end of the third quarter, 45-30. The girls led by as many as 22 in the game.
The girls were led in scoring by eighth grader Tazsa Garrett-Hammett, who had 21 points. Fannasy Garrett-Hammett was next with 16 points and Jana Maddox had eight points..
LaGrange Academy hosts Trinity Christian today.
