The Troup High wrestling team evened its season series with LaGrange with a victory on Saturday in the Area 5-AAAA duals at Alexander High.

Neither team finished among the top two, which they would have needed to do to advance to the state duals.

Troup finished with a 2-1 record to finish fourth, and LaGrange went 1-2 and finished fifth.

LaGrange and Troup had already wrestled once, with the Grangers earning the upper hand during a tournament at Callaway High.

Troup got the best of its county rival on Saturday with a 39-33 victory.

Troup also lost to Fayette County and beat Sandy Creek.

LaGrange opened with a victory over Sandy Creek before losing back-to-back matches to Alexander and Troup.

Alexander beat Carrollton in the finals, and both of those teams advance to state.

Troup head coach Chris Mitchem was pleased with the performance of his improving team.

“They still have things we have to improve on, but overall they did a good job,” Mitchem said.

Cameron Cato led the way for Troup with a 3-0 record with a pair of pins, and Jonathan Scott was also 3-0.

Jederrious Smith, Adam Love, Tanius Harris, Cassidy Carden and Michael Mackfield all went 2-1 for the Tigers.

For LaGrange, while it was an overall disappointing day, head coach Scooter Weathers said he was thrilled with the effort of Devonta Williams, who went 3-0 and was the only Granger to get a win in the Alexander match.

“He’s been a great leader. He never lets up,” Weathers said. “He goes hard. He’s like the heart and soul. He’s a leader. He really understands what he has to do, and he does it.”

LaGrange’s Qua Tucker was 2-0 on the day, and Kyler Hall and Emmanuel Mann each went 2-1.

Guy Wegienka won his only match.

Callaway, meanwhile, decided not to participate in its area tournament on Saturday because of a lack of wrestlers.
