Callaway High’s girls’ and boys’ basketball teams got big wins on the road in Atlanta on Friday night.

The Lady Cavaliers (9-4 overall) won 52-12 against Corretta Scott King and move to 5-2 in Region 4-AAA.

The Cavaliers (7-6 overall) defeated B.E.S.T. Academy 90-60.

The win gives the Cavaliers a 6-1 record in Region 4-AAA.

“We played a little sloppy, but we still came out with a win,” boys coach Terry Hayes said.

Nehemiah Jones scored a team-high 25 points for the Cavaliers. Brandon Bridges had 22 points.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Cavaliers led 15-1 after the first period, and they were up 30-3 at the half on the way to the blowout win.

Monica Jackson led Callaway with 16 points, followed by Ladasia Bray with 10 points.

LAGRANGE ACADEMY: The Lady Warriors (9-5, 3-3) won 73-38, while the Warriors (9-6, 3-3) took a tough 71-56 loss against Furtah Prep in Region 4-AA competition Friday night.

“We played really well and together,” coach Britt Gaylor said of the Lady Wariors. “Great team basketball. We did a phenomenal job in the second half, eating them up with our pressure. Also, we did a better job of getting rebounds and limiting them to second chance points. It was a great effort from the girls all the way around.”

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett led the way for the Lady Warriors with 23 points.

Her sister, Fannasy Garrett-Hammett, had 16 points, as did teammate Caitlynn Croft.

“Caitlynn shot the lights out tonight,” Gaylor commented.

The game was close for most of the first four minutes of the game before the Lady Warriors took control. After the intermission, they put some distance between them and the Lady Falcons before putting the game away.

In the boys’ game, Gaylor said it was much closer than the score indicates, but the coach admitted “we ran out of gas down the stretch.”

It was a back-and-forth affair with no more than three to five points separating the teams until a stretch in the fourth quarter when the Warriors were forced to start fouling.

Furtah was able to put the game away at that point.

“It was a highly competitive game,” Gaylor said. “These two teams are close in the standings. It doesn’t really reflect how close it was or how hard my boys played.”

Chase Wardlaw led the scoring for the Warriors with 18 points. Daniel Park and Mayokun Oshinowo each had 12 points.

The Warriors and Lady Warriors play a non-region game today at Oak Mountain Academy.
