Ever wonder why Congress’s favorability ratings are always under 20 percent while individual representatives fairly consistently get re-elected?
I would submit that the answer lies in the virtually complete dichotomization of political thought in this country. On one hand are those who believe, apparently fervently, that government is the answer to each and every social/economic problem, while on the other end are those who hold steadfastly that government is not only not the answer, but is frequently the source of the problem.
So, for those who look to government for resolution, they are invariably disappointed resulting in lower approval ratings because of their inability to manage their expectations. While on the other end of the spectrum, the lower approval ratings are the result of Congress even attempting to accomplish that which is both beyond their reach and grasp, along with the inevitable consequences, i.e., higher taxes, increased deficits, etc. Thus, we have one segment disappointed because they don’t get what they want and the other that doesn’t want what they get.
