Where those teams will be seeded is still up in the air, though.
By the time this weekend is over, everything will have been decided.
One of the teams hoping for a big weekend is the LaGrange High girls’ team.
The Lady Grangers (18-5 overall) carry an 8-4 Region 5-AAAA record into their final two regular-season games this weekend against Carrollton (17-7, 8-4 in region play) and Columbus (17-7, 8-4).
If the Lady Grangers win both games, they’ll be the number three seed for next week’s region tournament.
If they lose both games, they’ll be the number five seed.
If they split, they’ll be fourth or fifth.
Fayette County (17-5, 11-1) and Sandy Creek (19-4, 10-2) head into the weekend fighting it out for first place.
“Those are two big games that can determine our fate,” LaGrange head coach Jan Jones said.
The Lady Grangers split the previous meetings with Columbus and Carrollton.
They beat Carrollton 63-56, but they blew a big fourth-quarter lead at home and lost to Columbus 52-51.
LaGrange’s boys’ team, meanwhile, also carries an 8-4 record into the final two games of the regular season.
The Grangers are in fourth place, but they’re only one game behind first-place Shaw (16-7, 10-3).
Alexander (19-5, 10-3) is tied with Shaw for first place, followed by Fayette County (14-8, 9-3) and LaGrange (17-6, 8-4).
The Grangers will finish no lower than fourth, and they still have a shot to move up to first.
First up will be a road game against Carrollton (13-9, 5-7) today, and LaGrange will look to avenge an earlier 54-39 loss.
“We’re going to load up and try to beat Carrollton,” LaGrange head coach Mike Pauley said. “We were really disappointed the first time we played them.”
LaGrange then closes the regular season against Columbus, which hasn’t won a region game this season.
Troup’s teams close the regular season with home games against Shaw today.
The Lady Tigers (1-17 overall) are 1-12 in the region, and that one win came against Shaw.
If Troup wins today, it would wrap up the number seven seed for the region tournament.
Troup’s boys’ team, meanwhile, carries a 6-7 region record into today’s regular-season finale against Shaw.
The Tigers will either be the fifth or sixth seed for the region tournament.
Carrollton and Troup are tied for the fifth spot.
At Callaway, the Cavaliers head into today’s final regular-season game against B.E.S.T Academy needing a win to sew up the regular-season title in Region 4-AAA.
The Cavaliers (13-7 overall) are 12-1 in the region, one game ahead of second-place Douglass.
On the girls’ side, the Lady Cavaliers (13-7, 8-5) are tied with Douglass for third with one game remaining.
Callaway will host Correta S. King today.
If Callaway and Douglass remained tied after today’s games, they’ll flip a coin to see who the third seed is.
