Another chapter has been added to what was already an amazing turnaround story for the Callaway Lady Cavaliers.

With Friday’s 44-41 overtime victory over Central-Carroll, the Lady Cavaliers have earned the right to play for the Region 4-AAA championship.

Callaway and Chapel Hill (23-3) will face off at 6 p.m. today at Douglass High in Atlanta.

After winning nine games combined in the three previous seasons, the Lady Cavaliers have now won 16 games this season alone, and Friday’s win was the biggest the program has had in a long time.

Central-Carroll (20-6) had lost just one region game all season, and it was coming off a 30-point drubbing of Callaway (16-7) just two weeks ago.

“I’m so proud of them. All the hard work they’ve put in is starting to pay off for them,” Callaway head coach Deyano Martin said. “Anytime you work hard and start seeing results, it’s big.”

Win or lose today, Callaway will host a first-round game in the state tournament next week.

“We’re a better team on the road, but we’ll take our chances at home,” Martin said.

Against Central, the Lady Cavaliers were up 7-4 after the first period, and they led 24-12 at the half.

“We ran our zone against them, and I think that kind of frustrated them a little bit, slowed the game down a little bit,” Martin said.

The Lady Lions cut into the lead in the third period, and Callaway was up 30-25 as the fourth period began.

Central then pulled even in the fourth quarter, and the game headed to overtime tied at 37-37.

In the extra four-minute period, Tanesha Johnson scored four points to help Callaway take control.

“I’m so elated, I’m so proud of the girls,” Martin said. “It’s a wonderful victory for us.”

Johnson led Callaway with 21 points, and Monica Jackson added 12 points.
