Hogansville City Council is set to talk about panhandling at a future work session.

Despite the town’s population of just more than 3,000, Police Chief Moses Ector believes it’s a problem, said City Manager James Woods.

The city will look at ordinances from other towns across Georgia, along with one that had been proposed for LaGrange about two years ago. LaGrange City Council had concerns about panhandling on the promenade downtown, but eventually decided not to take action.

Council also voted Monday night to apply for another $500,000 community development block grant to fund sewer improvements on the southwest side of town. The city had previously been awarded a $500,000 CDBG grant for similar sewer work.

Mayor pro-tem Jack Leidner said the sewer work will coincide with the city’s plans to build a new wastewater treatment plant that will replace the sewage sprayfield. Work on a new sewer plant could begin in the fall, he said.

Woods also announced that the city is looking for applicants for Community Housing Improvement Program grant funds. Households that meet the requirements could get up to $40,000 each to bring houses up to code.

Households must have a senior citizen as a resident of the home up for improvements and meet income requirements.
