An exceptional season came to a close in the opening round of the Class AAA state tournament with a 57-39 loss to Tatnall County Wednesday night at home.
The Lady Cavaliers made drastic strides this season after three down years, and they closed the season with a 16-9 record.
“It was a great season for us,” Callaway head coach Deyano Martin said. “You’re always disappointed when you lose. We’ve come a long way. We just have to continue to work next year at getting better.”
Part of the reason the team made an 11-game improvement this season was because of Martin’s offseason program, and he said the players will work hard to be ready when the 2013-2014 season rolls around.
“The clock never stops,” Martin said. “There’s always something you can improve on, so hopefully we can get better over the summer, and bring it back in and be ready to fight.”
The game was the final one for seniors Jamonica Dean and Latasha Anderson.
Anderson scored a team-high 13 points in her final game.
“It’s always tough on the seniors, and I feel bad for them,” Martin said. “I thought Tasha played really well tonight.”
The Lady Cavaliers hung tough early, and the game was tied 14-14 after the first quarter.
The second quarter was a tough one for the home team, though, with Tatnall County dominating things to go up 26-18 at the half.
Tatnall County continued to extend its lead in the third period, and it took a 41-27 lead into the final quarter.
After falling behind by 17, the Lady Cavaliers went on a 6-0 run capped by a three-point play by Anderson, and they were within 11 with 2:12 remaining.
Tatnall scored the game’s final seven points, though, to put it away.
“We just wanted them to get a taste of big-time basketball, and we got a taste of it,” Martin said. “And once you get a taste of it, you’ll feel better the next time. You’ll be a little bit more mature and know how to handle it. You remember your past experiences, and you try not to let it happen again.”
