The short-handed LaGrange High golf team claimed a fourth-place finish during the Granger Invitational on Thursday at Highland Country Club.

The Grangers shot a team score of 366 to finish behind tournament champion Woodward Academy (334), runner-up Harris County (336) and third-place Carrollton (362).

Troup shot a 386 and finished fifth.

The Grangers were playing without three members of their starting five.

One was out with an injury, and the other two were participating in other spring sports.

The Grangers were without Jay Marston, who has had back soreness but is expected to return on Monday.

Jonathan Pelham plays soccer, and P.T. Alford plays baseball, and neither player was able to participate in Thursday’s tournament.

“It gives these guys who haven’t played tournaments, it gives them a taste of what it’s like,” LaGrange coach David Pleasants said. “In a practice round, you come out here and shoot low 40s. But you get in a tournament, it’s a little bit more pressure, and you don’t make as many putts.”

Justin Gordon paced the Grangers with an 88, Tripp Warren shot a 90, Devin Bray and Ryan Watts each shot a 94, and Press Thornton added a 99.

“Three of those six are sophomores, and one’s a freshman. So they’re young,” Pleasants said.

Pleasants said that when the Region 5-AAAA tournament comes around in April, the Grangers will be at full strength with all of the players available.

“Everything is practice until region,” Pleasants said.

Troup was led by Robert Jennings, who shot an 84, while Matt Morton added an 85.

Jacob Wood was next with a 107, Jacob Wood carded a 107, Parker Pearson shot a 110, and Ben McCrary shot a 111.

Woodward Academy’s Cam Andrade was the low medalist with a 74.
