A statewide lookout is in effect for an inmate who remains at large after escaping from a work-release program in Pine Mountain last month.

Donald Castleberry, 47, did not return back to Charles D. Hudson Transitional Center in LaGrange on May 23, according to officials with the Georgia Department of Corrections.

“We are unsure of how he left as he was at his work site and (was) not at the facility,” stated Gwendolyn Hogan, GDC spokeswoman, via email. “Castleberry was supposed to report back to the facility after his shift ended.”

Castleberry, a convicted child molester, was working at a poultry processing plant in Pine Mountain when he apparently walked away from his work detail May 23, said Harris County Sheriff Mike Jolley.

Three days passed by the time officials noticed Castleberry was missing, Jolley said. A warrant was then taken out and law enforcement officials started looking for the inmate.

Deputies, along with law enforcement officers with the local marshal’s office, searched for Castleberry in wooded areas and a few homes in Harris County, Jolley said, but came up empty.

“We doubt seriously that he is still here,” Jolley told the Daily News last week. “We looked for him for three or four days … he has no family in the area and no reason to stick around.”

Added Hogan: “Any offender that leaves a facility, we consider to be a risk. If spotted, don’t approach (him), and call 911.”

Castleberry is described as a white male with blue eyes and brown hair, standing 5-feet, 11-inches tall and weighing 219 pounds.

He was set to be released in November after serving a 10-year prison sentence.
