Someone apparently tried to sneak marijuana to jail trustees working at LaGrange Animal Shelter at 1390 Orchard Hill Road on Saturday, police said.

The suspected pot was inside a tennis ball that had been cut open and thrown onto the animal shelter property by someone in a vehicle passing by, surveillance video showed. Animal Control supervisor Chris Bussey said he saw the vehicle on surveillance throw the tennis ball and retrieved it before a trustee could find it.

The suspected pot, a lighter, rolling papers and unopened cigar all were inside the ball. An officer took the contraband as evidence and Bussey said he would keep the cut-open tennis ball as a training tool for staff.

Children found wandering on streets

A 4-year-old child was found wandering Saturday morning alone at Mitchell and Ridley avenues, police said.

Witnesses said they found the child alone and called police. An officer took the child to a nearby apartment complex, where the child’s mother waved down his cruiser.

The mother said the child woke up before her, unlocked the door and walked out without her realizing. The officer advised her to add a chain lock so the child couldn’t unlock the door again and gave her a warning.

On Sunday morning, police responded to another call where a child was wandering naked on Motley Street. The child had special needs, police said, and they located his father at a residence on the street.

The father said the child had left the house without him realizing. He was issued a warning citation for parental responsibility.

Fake money

A man reported that he received a fake $100 bill from his bank, which he discovered when he tried to use it purchase items.
