Officer: Man almost causes wreck, charged with DUI

An LPD officer said he observed a driver in a Toyota 4Runner on Boulevard turn right onto Vernon Street directly into the path of an oncoming vehicle, nearly causing an wreck. The officer switched on his lights and said he noticed the 4Runner was not staying in its lane. After the officer also turned on his siren, the SUV pulled into the Checkers parking lot.

According to the officer, the driver would not roll down the window and kept playing with his cell phone. The officer finally opened the driver’s side door and removed the cell phone from the driver’s hands.

The driver submitted to a field breathalyzer test, which showed he had a .264 percent blood alcohol content, according to a report. The driver was arrested on charges of DUI, driving on a suspended license from a previous DUI arrest, failure to yield and failure to maintain lane.
