LaGRANGE — Police responded to an accident about 1 a.m. Saturday at Mooty Bridge Road and North Street and found two men laying in the grass about 15 feet from a wrecked vehicle.

The men were conscious, but unable to talk because of their injuries, said a LaGrange Police Department officer on scene.

The officer said he could smell alcohol coming from the car and then was approached by a man, later identified by police as Gregory Iven Carston, 25, of LaGrange, who allegedly admitted to the officer “the wreck was my fault, it was my fault.” Carston also had an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, the officer stated.

Carston, who officers said also appeared to be the driver of the car, told police he looked down for a second and when he looked back up, he had run off the road and struck a pole. He said he got the two passengers out of the car and ran for help, according to a report.

One of the passengers, who was not restrained inside the vehicle, was flown out by Medevac to a nearby hospital, according to LPD.

The other passenger was also taken for treatment. Neither victim’s name nor condition was known at press time.

Carston also appeared to be injured in the crash and was taken by ambulance to West Georgia Medical Center for treatment. Officers said a sample of his blood was taken at the hospital was taken for a blood alcohol content reading.

LPD officers also confirmed Carston’s drivers license was suspended.

Carston was later released and transported to the Troup County Jail, where he was charged with two counts of DUI, driving while license suspended, failure to maintain lane, open container and no proof of insurance, according to an LPD report. He was released on a $4,000 bond Saturday, according to jail records.
