West Point Lake drowning ruled accidental

LaGRANGE — A man whose body was found Thursday in West Point Lake died of an accidental drowning, the state medical examiner’s office announced Tuesday.

James “Mike” Mealor, 64, of LaGrange was discovered in the lake about 7 p.m. Thursday after a passerby spotted clothing floating in the water, according to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office.

No foul play was suspected in the Mealor’s death, sheriff’s Sgt. Stewart Smith said previously. His body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office in the Atlanta area for an autopsy.

A memorial service for Mealor is set for 1 p.m. at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home. A full announcement of services is expected Thursday.
