LaGRANGE — The Troup County Board of Education is set to host a public hearing and vote on its millage rate at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The board will convene 5:30 p.m. Thursday for its regular board meeting, then adjourn for the 6:30 p.m. millage rate hearing, said Byron Jones, school system CFO. The meeting will be at the Troup County School System Administrative Services Center, 100 N. Davis Road, building C.

The board has not announced any plans to increase the millage rate, but it will be a tax increase to certain residents if the millage is unchanged due to increases in property tax revenue. Any governmental entity that would collect more overall in tax revenue than in the previous year due to property value increases in its taxable jurisdiction is required to hold public hearings if it chooses not to roll back the rate.

Rolling back the rate would mean the school system will collect the same amount in taxes as the previous year. Not rolling back the rate means higher property taxes for those whose taxable property has been valued higher than last year.

The board is set to vote on the millage after the public hearing.
