COLUMBUS – They stayed alive with a big win over Madison County on Tuesday, now the West Point all-stars are two victories away from a state championship.

There are two teams left standing in the Senior League state softball tournament in Columbus, and they will play today.

West Point and Northern-Columbus will play at 6 p.m. today, and if Northern wins, the tournament is over.

If West Point wins today, a winner-take-all game would be played on Thursday at 6 p.m.

West Point is 3-1 in the double-elimination tournament, and its lone loss came at the hands of Northern on Monday.

After beating East Athens 14-1 and Madison County 10-9, West Point lost to Northern 19-3.

Facing elimination, West Point thumped Madison County 13-7 on Tuesday to reach the championship round.

Things weren’t looking good early for West Point, which trailed Madison County 6-1.

That was a familiar situation for the team, though.

In Sunday’s game against Madison County, West Point trailed 9-3 before rallying for the win.

So there was no panic when a similar situation arose on Tuesday.

West Point scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Ten different West Point players had hits, including Kelsey Oliver, who was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.

Makinna Quenton was also 2-for-4, and Tori Harmon and Makayla Barber each had doubles.
