LaGRANGE — The Troup County Board of Elections and Registration has started regularly scheduled maintenance of the voter registration list and is working to contact voters who have not cast ballots or had contact with the Georgia secretary of state’s office in several years.

According to Andy Harper, Troup’s elections supervisor, 2,755 of the roughly 39,000 registered voters in Troup County have been identified as inactive and soon will begin receiving notices to update their registration. Those who fail to respond run the risk of having their name transferred to an inactive voter list.

Notices will be sent to voters who have been inactive for three years or more and will include a pre-stamped and pre-addressed return card to assist in updating voter registration, said Jane McCoy, chairperson of the BOER.

McCoy urged voters to return the card as soon as possible. By law, voters have 30 days to respond to the notice.

The maintenance is required by Georgia law and must be completed each odd-numbered year. The Georgia secretary of state’s office is charged with identifying voters who, within the preceding three calendar years, have not updated a registration card, filed a change in name or address, signed a voter’s certificate or confirmed the elector’s continuation at the same address.

Voter registration may also be checked and updated online at the Georgia secretary of state’s My Voter Page at www.mvp.sos.ga.gov. Registered voters must enter their first initial, last name, county of registration and birth date to access the site.

The MVP site allows users to make changes of address, find a polling station, request absentee ballot information and print or email a precinct card.

Oct. 5 is the deadline to register to vote or make changes in time for the Nov. 3 municipal elections, Harper said.

Non-U.S. citizens, convicted felons and those deemed mentally incompetent are ineligible.

Potential eligible voters must be at least 18 years old by election day and may register as early as six months prior to their 18th birthday. First-time voter registration may also be completed using the secretary of state’s MVP website.
