A Laurel Ridge resident suffered a gunshot wound to his leg after dropping his gun early Sunday morning.

Police responded to the call of a person shot in the 100 block of Laurel Ridge Avenue. When they arrived, the resident said he was taking his handgun from his pocket and dropped it, and causing it to fire; the bullet hit his leg.

The resident was taken to West Georgia Medical Center for treatment.

Man faces charges after drunken rant

A 56-year-old man was charged with public drunkenness, a misdemeanor, after an altercation Saturday evening on Fulton Street.

Police had responded to a separate incident in the first block of Fulton Street when an officer said he saw a man standing in the road with an open beer. The man admitted to being drunk, the officer reported, and the officer told him that having an open container in the roadway could be grounds for his arrest, and asked him to go inside. He complied.

Officers were called back out to the residence less than an hour later and found the allegedly drunken man yelling at a neighbor. Officers tried to speak with the man, but said he continued to yell and walk around and into the road, then cursed at them and told them to “take me to jail,” so officers arrested him.

The man allegedly began threatening the officers’ jobs while being transported to the Troup County Jail.

Teen charged with DUI

A rising high school senior was arrested early Sunday morning on DUI and other charges after a police officer pulled him over for alleged erratic driving.

The officer reported that he saw the teen’s SUV accelerating quickly and swerve over the center line on streets near LaGrange High School before he pulled the vehicle over. The 18 year old initially told the officer that he had not been drinking, but that someone had spilled some alcohol on him at a party.

The officer reported that the teen was fidgety, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was uneven and he smelled of alcohol. The teen eventually admitted to having some sips of alcohol, the officer reported, but said he was the most sober person at the party and was driving others home.

The teen performed some sobriety tests and failed. A breath test showed he had a 0.074 blood alcohol content, according to the officer’s report. He arrested and taken to West Georgia Medical Center for a blood test and then cited for DUI, failure to maintain lane and violation of a class D license – all misdemeanors.
