LaGRANGE — City Council adopted the 2015 municipal election calendar of events Tuesday and designated the Troup County’s voter registrar as the city’s 2015 elections and absentee ballots clerk.

Three City Council member seats will be up for election, which are currently held by council members Bobby Traylor of District 1 and Willie Edmonson and LeGree McCamey of District 2.

“We’re actually hiring the Troup County Board of Elections to conduct the affairs related to the municipal elections in the coming year,” said City Manager Tom Hall.

The city has three options regarding the designation of a voter registrar. The city can retain the services of the probate judge, it can retain the services of the county’s Board of Elections or the city can run the elections using the city clerk.

LaGrange has used the Troup County Board of Elections to handle the previous two elections. The Board of Elections is a seven-member board that is comprised of officials from throughout the county. One member is appointed by each of the three cities in Troup County, while the Troup County Commission appoints two members to the board. The remaining two members are appointed from the county’s Democratic and Republican party.

A.R. Ransom has served as LaGrange’s appointee to the Board of Elections for the previous municipal elections.

“We do not have any oversight role regarding the Board of Elections other than to appoint a board member,” said Thornton. “We actually nominate the member and they appoint that person.”

Residents of Troup County’s three cities who are interested in running for elected municipal office must complete and file their qualifying paperwork between Aug. 31 and Sept. 4. The City Council candidate qualifying fee for LaGrange is $216.

Candidates who wish to run for office must complete the necessary paperwork, including disclosures regarding personal finances, fiduciary positions, ownership of real estate and businesses, investments and annual payments from the state government; the candidate’s spouse’s direct ownership of real estate must also be disclosed. A notice of candidate affidavit must also be signed and notarized.

Throughout the process, candidates also must disclose campaign contributions to a state ethics commission. Packets with the necessary paperwork and pertinent information for LaGrange candidates are available at the Troup County Government Center.
