LANETT, Ala. — Spring Road Christian Church and Point University will host a national traveling art exhibit at the church starting later this month.

The exhibit, Come to the Table, is set to be on display at Spring Road Christian Church from Aug. 23 to Sept. 16. The exhibit is made available locally through CIVA, Christians in the Visual Arts, a nonprofit organization founded in 1979, dedicated to exploring and nurturing the relationship between the visual arts and the Christian faith.

Come to the Table features 35 selected works including historical pieces by Albrecht Durer to modernist works by Jasper Johns and Sadao Watanabe, and contemporary pieces created by CIVA-member artists. This collection, executed in a variety of media, celebrates both the rich community gathered at the table of fellowship and the privilege of meeting with God at his table of communion, said Jennifer Craft, professor of biblical studies and humanities at Point university.

“From Abraham entertaining angels, to the Christ’s last supper with his disciples, to the great marriage feast of the lamb at the end of time, the table is a rich biblical metaphor,” Craft said. “Indeed, the promise of Revelation 19 is that human history will culminate around a table where the people of God are all present. God’s table is a place of welcome, justice, abundance, and worship.”

The opening reception for the exhibit is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 28 with dinner and a lecture by Craft. The exhibit will be open to the public 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 4 to 6 p.m. Sundays. The church will also host special “gallery gatherings” with lectures Sept. 2, 9 and 16 at 7 p.m. The gallery is located at Spring Road Christian Church, 1729 Spring Road in Lanett.
