The Troup High softball team had a difficult time getting the bats going in its season opener on Tuesday.

Facing home-standing Brookstone, Troup was limited to one run in a 4-1 loss.

Brookstone had a big edge when it comes to game experience.

While Troup was playing its first game, it was the sixth game of the season for Brookstone, which improved to 5-1.

Troup got a stellar pitching performance from senior Hanna Lane, who went the distance and gave up three earned runs on five hits.

Lane also had a base hit, and Maddie Weathers was 2-for-3 with a double.

Also on Tuesday, Callaway was off to a strong start against Temple when the game was called because of rain.

Callaway scored one run in the first inning and three more in the second to build a 4-0 lead.

Temple was hitting in the bottom of the second when it started raining, and the game was unable to resume.

Callaway is scheduled to host Temple in the regular-season finale on Sept. 30, and coach Ashley Summerlin said the teams may end up playing a doubleheader that day to make up for the loss of Tuesday’s game.

Callaway and Troup, along with LaGrange, will play in the Callaway Classic that will be held Friday and Saturday at Shuford Fields.

All three teams will play five games over the course of the two days.

Callaway will play Northside and Manchester on Friday, and Shaw and Bowdon on Saturday.

Troup plays Hardaway and Heard County on Friday, and Landmark Christian and LaGrange on Saturday.

LaGrange’s opponents on Friday are Bowdon and Heard County, and it will play Hardaway and Troup on Saturday.

The fifth opponent for all three teams will be determined by where they finish in their respective pools.
