FRANKLIN — Authorities discovered the remains of a person Wednesday in southern Heard County about three miles from the Troup County border.

A person found the body shortly after 10 a.m. on Edwards Road off U.S. Highway 27 and called 911, according to Chris Acosta, director of the Heard County 911 center.

The body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations crime lab in metro Atlanta for an autopsy scheduled later today, according to GBI Special Agent Fredrick Wimberly. The cause of death is yet to be determined, he said.

The Heard County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the GBI, was investigating the incident.

No identification of the body had been released as of press time today.

The remains were found on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property near West Point Lake, according to Jay Jamison, a chief park ranger with the corps.

Edwards Road is located west of Fromby Creek on the western side of U.S. Highway 27, north of the Hillcrest community in Troup County.

Calls to the Heard County Sheriff’s Office were not returned by press time and no further information was available this morning.
