After getting their first region softball win of the season earlier in the week in dramatic fashion, the Callaway Lady Cavaliers were hoping to make it two in a row on Thursday at Rockmart, but it didn’t happen.

Rockmart, which beat Callaway 6-1 earlier in the season, captured a 7-4 victory on Thursday in the final regular-season meeting between the two Region 5-AAA opponents.

On Tuesday, Callaway rallied from behind in the final inning to beat Haralson County 8-6, with Brittany Mitchell hitting a walk-off home run to win it.

That was Callaway’s first region win after seven consecutive losses.

Mitchell hit another home run and had two hits in Thursday’s game, but the day belonged to Rockmart.

“We’re getting people on,” Callaway head coach Ashley Summerlin said. “Getting people on isn’t a problem. We’ve just got to get them in.”

Callaway will complete its region schedule next week against Central-Carroll.

The Lady Cavaliers will then turn their attention to the region tournament where they’ll need to finish in the top four to qualify for the state playoffs.

“We keep getting better,” Summerlin said. “Hopefully we’ll come together when we get in that tournament.”

Also on Thursday, the Troup Lady Tigers held a 2-0 lead against Whitewater, but they ended up losing 4-2 in the Region 5-AAAA game.

Troup completed the regular season with a 5-5 region record, and it will be the number three seed in the region tournament.

Whitewater, the number two seed, will play Troup in a best-of-three series in the region tournament.

The winner of that series will play either Carrollton or Woodward Academy for the region championship.

Whitewater, Carrollton, Troup and Woodward Academy have already qualified for the state playoffs.

LaGrange fell to 4-5 in Region 1-AAAAA with Thursday’s 10-1 road loss to Columbus.

The Lady Grangers were trailing 8-0 when they scored their lone run in the top of the fourth inning.

SOCCER: The LaGrange Academy Warriors are one win away from a region championship.

In a road game on Thursday against Brandon Hall, the Warriors scored a pair of second-half goals on the way to a 2-0 victory.

LaGrange Academy, which improved to 4-1 in region play, will host Furtah Prep on Tuesday with a chance to win the region title.

LaGrange Academy will then turn its attention to the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association state playoffs.

In Thursday’s game, LaGrange Academy dominated the first half, but it was unable to score a goal.

“We were really aggressive in the first half getting going and dominating play,” LaGrange Academy coach Mike Petite said. “We hit the post, and the keeper made some really good saves for them.”

Ten minutes into the second half, the Warriors took the lead.

Will Trotter came up with a loose ball, and he weaved his way through traffic and eventually scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

With 20 minutes remaining, the Warriors got some insurance when Zach Callaghan scored on an assist from Mason Brown.

“It was a good team win,” Petite said. “I was real proud of Will and (Callaghan) stepping up as the senior leaders on the team and making sure we got the win today.”

VOLLEYBALL: The Lafayette Christian School Cougars came up with a big region win on Thursday over visiting Heirway Christian.

With the win, the Cougars (8-4 overall) improved to 4-2 in region play, and they’re still in the hunt to earn the top seed for the region tournament.

Lafayette Christian head coach Rene Gomez felt Thursday’s game was a critical one for the team as it looks to prove it can be a title contender in the region.

“If we want to make a move and be contenders in region play, this was to be a statement game,” Gomez said. “We needed to play well against a tough team, and do our best to see exactly where we’re at. Are we going to have a chance to compete? And we did.”

The Cougars lost the first game 25-23, but they dominated the rest of the match.

After winning a close second game 25-21, they cruised in the final two games 25-11 and 25-13.

“When we needed a big play, it went our way,” Gomez said. “It was an oustanding performance.”

Jenna Vedrenne had a big day for the Cougars with 11 kills and seven aces, Beth Ann Wyzykowski had seven aces, Abbey Hudson had eight assists and seven digs, and Christine Vedrenne contributed five aces.
