Cougars earn state playoff spot with thrilling win

LAGRANGE – They’re playoff-bound.
The Lafayette Christian School Cougars punched their ticket to the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association state playoffs with a thrilling 35-34 win over visiting Holy Ground on Friday.
It was a game the Cougars had to have if they wanted to make it to the playoffs, and they got it done.
Holy Ground scored a touchdown with about 20 seconds remaining to get within one, but Lafayette Christian’s defense stood firm on the ensuing two-point attempt to preserve the victory.
Jemi Reed had touchdown runs of 15 and 35 yards for the Cougars, quarterback Landon Whitley had a 15-yard scoring run, and Sam Marshall added a 1-yard touchdown run.
Lafayette Christian’s defense also got into the act, with Eli Shepherd picking off a pass and returning it for a touchdown to give his team a 35-20 lead.
Holy Ground scored a pair of touchdowns to get close, but Lafayette Christian held on for the one-point win.
