LaGRANGE — The statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped one-tenth of a percent to 5.6 percent in November, down from 5.7 percent in October, according to Georgia Department of Labor statistics released last week.

The regional unemployment rate for west and central Georgia dropped below the state average in November to 5.4 percent, according to the Three Rivers Commission, a quasi-governmental consortium of 10 counties including Troup, Meriwether, Heard, Coweta and Carroll. That number is down from about 6.1 percent last month.

Nonseasonally adjusted unemployment in LaGrange remained slightly higher than the state average at 5.7 percent in November. That number is significantly lower than the 7.3 percent rate a year ago, and is also down from September, when 5.9 percent of LaGrange’s labor force was unemployed.

Nationally, the unemployment rate is 5 percent, according to the state labor department.

The Georgia Department of Economic Development reported no layoffs in Troup during November. December layoff reporting is not yet available.

The labor force in LaGrange is estimated to be about 14,933 people over the age of 16, according to the state labor department.

Elsewhere in Georgia, metro Gainesville had the lowest area jobless rate at 4.2 percent.
