Investigators with the LaGrange Police Department are determining who might have sent a congregation member at the First United Methodist Church, 401 Broad St., emails posing as the pastor of the church asking for thousands of dollars.

According to the member, she began receiving the emails on Jan. 5 she believed came from the pastor, asking her to wire money for a charity they were going to sponsor.

The unknown person asked to be wired $12,750, the report stated.

The woman told officers she believed it was the pastor sending the emails, complete with the account and bank information needed to complete the transfer, so she did not question him about it.

The member said when she went to the bank, they told her the routing number was incorrect, but found the right information and sent the money.

According to the woman, she found out Wednesday that the pastor never sent any of the emails and did not know anything about them.

The church was still working with the bank in order to find out if the money had been withdrawn from that account, according to the police report.

Entering auto

A woman told LaGrange police someone entered her 2008 Ford Fusion while it was parked outside her home in the 100 block of North Barnard Avenue and stole her diamond engagement ring and a prescription bottle full of Oxycodone.

The victim called officers around 1 a.m. Wednesday after her husband came home and noticed a light on inside the car.

She said she returned home about 8 p.m. Tuesday and remembered locking the driver’s side door with a key fob. But she told police the passenger side doors have to be manually locked and forgot to check them before going inside.

She said both the engagement ring and the prescription pill bottle were in plain view in the center console.

Police were investigating.

Alleged DUI wreck

Police said a man suspected of DUI crashed into another vehicle on Mooty Bridge Road on Dec. 29.

The reporting officer said he was at the intersection of Mooty Bridge Road and the road next to Walmart when a truck appeared to be speeding about 11:45 p.m. When the officer went to stop the truck, it went over a hill and the officer next saw it collide with another truck pulling out of Cameron Crossing, 1600 Mooty Bridge Road.

The officer said the driver, identified in the report as James Allen Tyrer, 43, whose address was unavailable, had several partially empty beer and liquor bottles in the truck. The officer arrested Tyrer, who he said then became uncooperative and later refused a blood test.

He was taken to Troup County Jail and charged with misdemeanors of DUI, driving too fast for conditions, reckless driving and obstruction.
