LAGRANGE – The Troup Lady Tigers didn’t let off the accelerator.

After taking a 37-28 lead through three periods, Troup stayed aggressive in the fourth quarter on the way to a 49-33 victory in a Region 5-AAAA home game.

The Lady Tigers improved to 1-3 in the region.

Troup guards Kwyneshia Spence and Shaqoya Gilbert both had big games.

Gilbert had a game-high 20 points, and Spence added 16 points.

Troup head coach Carla Thornton was pleased to see the way those two players bounced back after tough outings against Whitewater earlier in the week.

“We challenged those two,” Thornton said. “One had two points, and one have five points the last game. We needed those girls to step up. They did.”

The Lady Tigers trailed 25-21 at the half, but they took control in the third period.

Troup outscored Fayette County 16-3 in the third quarter to take a nine-point lead.

It was tied at 28-28 when Troup went on a 9-0 run to take control.

The Lady Tigers didn’t sit on their lead in the fourth quarter.

They stayed aggressive and kept pushing the pace, and kept doing the things that had allowed them to seize momentum.

“We’ve had some games where teams have come back,” Thornton said. “We didn’t want that to happen. We had to keep the lead.”

After Fayette County got within six with 5:23 to play, Troup scored the game’s final 10 points to put it away.

At one point, Spence scored twice in a seven-second span to push the lead to 14 with 1:49 remaining.

In Friday’s boys’ game, Troup was unable to break through for its first region win.

The Tigers trailed 29-15 at the half, and they ended up losing 53-27.

Troup fell to 0-4 in the region.

Troup’s teams will be at home against non-region foe Manchester today, with the girls’ game starting at 6 p.m., and the boys’ game to follow.
