HOGANSVILLE – In their second game of the season, the Callaway Lady Cavaliers were blown out on the road by the Valley Lady Rams.

Those same two teams squared off again on Saturday, more than a month after the first meeting, and things played out a lot differently.

Callaway, a more complete team than it was back in early December, used a strong second-half effort to pull away from Valley for a 66-57 victory.

One player Callaway didn’t have during the earlier game against Valley was senior guard Tanesha Johnson, and she was her team’s leading scorer in Saturday’s game with 18 points, and she made four of her team’s five 3-pointers.

Alexus Scott added 16 points, and Ki Ki Owens scored 15 points.

The Lady Cavaliers started quickly, surging to a 7-0 lead, but by the close of the first quarter they were behind 14-12.

It remained tight in the second period, with Callaway taking a 25-23 lead at the break.

Johnson made a pair of 3-pointers and scored nine points in the first half to help Callaway take the two-point lead.

Callaway began to take over in the third quarter, outscoring Valley 20-10 to grab a 45-33 lead at the break.

Johnson helped spark the Lady Cavaliers in the third period with a pair of 3-pointers, and Kelly Carlisle also made one from long distance to help her team create some separation.

Ke Ke Talley scored all four of her points in the third period as Callaway took a double-digit lead into the final eight minutes.

Valley got hot in the fourth period and made six 3-pointers, with Taylor Miller making three of them on the way to a 28-point night.

The outcome was never in doubt, though, as Callaway scored 21 more points in the fourth period to put the game away.

Owens was 6-of-8 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to help Callaway maintain the lead.

For the game, the Lady Cavaliers were a solid 15-of-24 from the free-throw line.

Callaway will begin the second half of its Region 5-AAA schedule with a home game against Central-Carroll on Tuesday.

The Lady Cavaliers (6-8 overall) will carry a 3-2 region record into the game, and they’re in a second-place tie with Cedartown.

Callaway will be back home on Friday to host Haralson County before visiting Cedartown on Saturday.
