Voter registration ends Feb. 1

LaGRANGE — The deadline to register to vote in Georgia’s upcoming presidential primary is Feb. 1.

The presidential primary election will be held March 1 and absentee voting by mail is already underway across the state.

Registered voters can request mail-in absentee ballots by contacting the Troup County Board of Elections and Registration by calling 706-883-1745. Voter may only request either a Republican or Democratic ballot.

Those needing to register to vote may do so in person at the county elections office at the Troup County Government Center, 100 Ridley Avenue, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Online registration is also available at the Georgia Secretary of State’s My Voter Page at www.mvp.sos.ga.gov. The website can also be used to register a change of address, find key election dates and find a polling station.

The Daily News will print sample ballots when early voting begins Feb. 8.

Georgia residents may also print out a voter registration application by visiting the case-sensitive link http://1.usa.gov/1nbjq3V and downloading the form to mail in.

College students can register to vote by finding the necessary forms at their school’s registrar’s office.

When renewing a driver’s license, Georgia residents may also check the “voter registration” box and be automatically registered.

To register to vote you must:

• Be a citizen of the United States

• Be a legal resident of the county

• Be at least 17 1/2 years of age to register and 18 years of age to vote

• Not be serving a sentence for conviction of a felony involving moral turpitude

• Have not been found mentally incompetent by a judge.
